Sideways, horizontal life with my pillows—either in bed or on the floor.

That’s the dimension of existence I crave more often than I would like to admit.

Over the last 7 years, I’ve been dealing with a prolonged illness that has sidelined me from the dreams I conceived of as I entered my 20s. Instead of launching a career, travelling the world, and deepening social connections far and wide, I…. fell into a career, traversed the medical system, and married a Texan who whisked me 2000 miles away from home.

Huh. That’s not bad, actually 🤷🏻‍♀️

If there’s something I’d like you to take away from my years flailing around, blind, in the Canadian and American healthcare maze—surviving autoimmune encephalitis, incorrect diagnoses, and the subsequent emotional consequences of it all—it’s this: it’s all a matter of framing. In good health or poor health, your framing controls your narrative, and your narrative controls your life.

But for the days the frame is falling apart, know that you’re not alone.

Find me writing here, Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, learning how to tame the chronic illness beast inside its frame.
